On Bloody Ground: Hail to Engla londe!

The year of our lord ten-sixty something, the kingdom is once again assailed by the heathen Norsemen, raping the cattle and pillaging the women! Led by the valkyrie Jenny, all that stood between Engla londe and Viking depredation was the Saxon army commanded by Phil and myself!

Using the On Bloody Ground Norman Conquest rules, the Saxon Huscarls took the centre flanked by brave Thegns, with Geburs skirmishing to their front.

The Norse pushed aggressively forward as the English Huscarls and Thegns formed shieldwalls.

On the Saxon left flank two units of Ceorls with some Geburs found themselves facing two units of Heathen Bondi, alongside Thrall skirmishers and a group of howling mad Ulfhednar!

Clearly having had a couple of cans of pre-battle Carling Black Label the Saxon Geburs decided to sling some stones at the Viking Hirdmen to their front - somehow killing one!

The Norse Thralls concentrating their efforts on the Geburs screening the Saxon Thegns on the English right.

The Saxon Thegns girded their loins...

As the Heathens continued to aggressively push forward...

One group of Bondi crashing into a Saxon Thegn shieldwall!

Steel clashed on steel and the fighting was bloody!

But Wotan, sorry the Lord, shone his light down on the Saxons as they wiped out the Norse invaders!

On the other flank the beserk Ulfhednar charged into the Ceorls, howling as they went...

But the lowly Saxons stood firm, despite suffering many dead!

Killing the Ulfhednar Champion in the second round of fighting...

And wiping the wolfs-heads out in the third! Hail the brave Ceorls of Engla londe!

Back on the right another unit of Bondi decided to try its luck against a Thegn shieldwall...

With even less success than their heathen comrades before them!

In two turns of vicious swordplay the Viking raiders were turned into carrion fodder by the brave Saxon warriors!

Emboldened by the success the Saxons decided to take the battle to the enemy, the Huscarls, Thegns and remaining Ceorls charging the Norse Hirdmen and their king!

Whilst on the English right, three units of Thegns targeted the remaining Norse Bondi!

Unfortunately the central Thegn unit failed its charge order, but the other two slammed into the flanks of the Viking Bondi...

Attacked on two flanks, the outcome was inevitable...

And the Bondi were turned to worm-food!

In the centre Huscarl, Thegn and Ceorl smashed into the Viking Hirdmen, the Ceorls managing to catch their enemy in the flank!

A violent and bloody melee ensued with many a heathen sent to Valhalla and brave Saxon carried into the arms of the Lord...

Following their victory on the right, another group of Saxon Thegns moved towards the melee aiming to attack the Hirdmens left flank.

Whilst a group of Heathen Bondi tried to rush to the rescue from the left...

However, neither managed to get there as Phil and I seized the initiative and the Ceorls cut down the Viking King!!!

The Hirdmen were vanquished!

Trying to regain some honour the Bondi who had been deployed on the Saxon left charged the remaining unit of Ceorls there...

Smashing into the hardy Saxon peasants...

The Ceorls fought bravely, taking a number of the heathens down...

But ultimately the Viking warriors defeated the Saxon braves.

In the centre the remaining Norse Bondi tried to take on the Saxon centre...

But sensibly failed their charge roll!

In a final act of infamy Jenny ordered her Thralls to throw javelins into the backs of the  Saxon Ceorls heroes but Odin was clearly displeased with her and they all missed.

This was the end of turn six - and the end of the game. A decisive Saxon victory! Hail to Engla londe!

A lot of fun there and huge thanks to Phil and Jenny for hosting the game and letting me play with their toy soldiers. Jenny's dice rolling was pretty awful all game and, unusually, mine generally really good - several Norse leaders fell to my rolling of successive sixes, so I'm not sure of Phil and my "tactics: were the reason for the victory or it was just dumb luck.
