Perhaps this has something to do with our beliefs and meaning around our hobby?

For instance photography, ranges from happy snaps to hard core professional tool to a way of capturing something beautiful. People spend £4000.00 on a Leica camera down to £50.00 or so on a cheap point and shoot. Choice is up to them.

Perhaps what we are talking about here is choice, but as has been said PDFs are becoming a larger part of the market, and they are cheaper.

My guess is that if you want a professional glossy looking product the market price is probably around £25.00 to £50.00 per volume for what are essentially limited run books that are say equivalent to academic textbooks. It is all a matter of perspective I suppose, $50 for a lifetime of reading and playing or $80 for 90 minutes of misery watching a football international?myron.shipphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12170971709644067502noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6040044535247270481.post-47071717475654121562011-09-12T22:28:28.132+01:002011-09-12T22:28:28.132+01:00Thus is why I have a habit of only buying rules th...Thus is why I have a habit of only buying rules that are completely out of fashion but were the dogs b*&"*+ks ten years ago.Jim Jackamanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00418123950779160903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6040044535247270481.post-18106988539739554152011-09-12T21:53:51.473+01:002011-09-12T21:53:51.473+01:00I would like to see a combined approach: pdfs or l...I would like to see a combined approach: pdfs or low cost print runs for me to buy, try and decide. With the addition of my shiny new ipad I have begun scanning in the remainder of my wargames rulebooks.

The iPad has been most handy as its more convenient than a laptop!

It has to be said that games like Gruntz and Shadowsea which have fantastic production values and great rules without the hefty price tag seem to be the way to go, especially as they are available as PDFs!Leutenant Brittanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09168956359674800646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6040044535247270481.post-83146321233082757852011-09-12T20:28:45.857+01:002011-09-12T20:28:45.857+01:00I think Steve's Wargame Stuff, said it all!!! I can understand that there's a maket for shiny, glossy, over-illustrated rules sets which more often than not are for competition-based armies; a game, hardly a wargame in many cases. Personally, I am increasingly focused on the game mechanisms and the simulation of historical battlefield conditions (the content) and paying less and less attention to the container. An example of this is Richard Clarke's TooFatLardies rules, focused on the game mechanisms, distributed by pdf at very low cost and no photos.Anibal Invictushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00574972963418062956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6040044535247270481.post-60847407099531734512011-09-12T19:22:06.162+01:002011-09-12T19:22:06.162+01:00I get the feeling that a certain elitism is creepi...I get the feeling that a certain elitism is creeping into this hobby of ours ... We all suffer from the 'ooh, shiny, shiny' syndrome but I must admit to turning into a bargain hunter (or tight git) over the years. Ebay is my first port of call for anything and everything at the moment. Certain companies who shall remain nameless seem intent on ripping every last note from it's players pockets... not really what the hobby should be about in my humble opinion. .. Cheap bargain figures, free rule downloads and fun gaming, that's my view.....
